A Pioneering Case for Female Athletes
During the 1960s, there were no high school swim teams for girls in Illinois. Understanding the discrimination faced by female athletes entering high school due to limited opportunities, Sandra, with the unwavering support of her parents and Coach Don Watson, took a courageous step by filing a lawsuit against the Illinois High School Association in federal court.
The court's ruling in Sandra Lynn Bucha, et al. v. Illinois High School Association, et al., United States District Court, N.D. Illinois, E.D. (351 F. Supp. 69) was referenced in many subsequent court opinions contributing to the enactment of the Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, along with several amendments that followed. Although Sandra did not win her individual case, her fight became a significant reference point in future legal battles for gender equality in sports.
Sandra was a finalist in the 1972 Olympic trials and narrowly missed making the 1972 Olympic team. It was while attending Stanford University that Sandra embarked on her professional marathon swimming career.

Between 1973 and 1975, while competing against men and women, she was undefeated as the first female in all of her marathon swims. She finished ahead of nearly all male competitors as well, placing third to a male swimmer only once, and usually finishing a close second overall. Her accomplishments were recognized through her induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, both in the Class of 2014.
In 1975, Sandra retired from professional swimming to pursue her career in law.
Her achievements—both in the water and as a trailblazer for gender equity—helped pave the way for thousands of girls and women in sports. She advanced the acceptance of women in the male-dominated world of marathon swimming and continues to advocate on behalf of female athletes everywhere as she did over 50 years ago.
